CRISIS AT APAM SHS
Students of Apam Senior High School now have some relief from the water shortage that had hit the school for three weeks.
The school suffered an acute water shortage when Apam and its surrounding areas were hit by a serious water crisis as a result of a power outage that affected Winneba, its source of water supply suffered.
In an interview, the Headmaster of the school, Mr A.K. Fuah, said the school was now getting help from Mfantsiman Girls’ Senior High School which was providing it with water, while the school was also buying water from tankers.
He said the water crisis was becoming a ritual since it had been so every two years but added that “this time it is intense”.
The headmaster said the school had a water storage system but because of the current student population, the water often ran out quicker than is expected. He gave the assurance that the school was doing all it could to solve the problem.
He stated that the shortage of water had also affected the school’s finances since a tanker of water cost about GH¢60.
Mr Fuah said the water crisis had also negatively affected the students, especially the fresh ones who were experiencing the situation for the first time.
Some of the students who spoke to the Junior Graphic said although the school was doing something about the shortage, the water that was being provided did not meet the needs of all of them and that had forced them to search for water outside the school.
Some said the water situation was affecting their studies because they had to go in search of water to use after school and also for the next morning.
According to them, the situation was even more worrying particularly because it was time for examination yet they had to find water when they should be studying.
