St Martin De Porres Wins Road Safety Quiz

The National Road Safety Commission ( NRSC), has organised a nation-wide quiz on road safety regulations for school children to minimise road accidents in the country.
The quiz also formed part of this year’s road safety week celebration which is on the theme, “Ensuring a crash free election 2008”.
In Accra, Christian Home School hosted Blessed School Complex Limited, St Martin De Porres School and Ave Maria School in a fierce competition.
Joshua Foli and Nii Adu Sackey-Addo of St Martin De Porres School of Dansoman had 47 points to win the first prize, followed by Obed Fordjour and Emmanuella Adjei of Ave Maria School, in second place. Christian Home School’s Ellen Peprah and Nouna Matrivi placed third, while Abigail Annan and Akushika Mingle of Blessed School Complex Limited took the fourth position.
The Regional Manager of NRSC, Mr Tandoh, in an interview with the Junior Graphic said 2007 recorded 42 per cent pedestrian accidents out of which 23 per cent affected children below the ages of 16.
He explained that the high accident rate among children calls for more education on road safety.
He added that children often paid less attention to road signs and safety techniques, which caused them to be involved in accident most of the time.
Mr Tandoh said “ the quiz will help children to know more about the dos and don’ts to bring them to terms with road signs”. He also entreated children to talk to their parents about the need to use seat belts.
The Headmaster of Christian Home School, Mr J.K Atichoe-Monnie, added his voice to the call on children to be careful when using the road.
All the schools that participated in the quiz as well as the contestants were given products by the sponsors, Multi Pro Limited, producers of Indomie, Promasidor, makers of Cowbell Milk, ReadWide Limited, dealers in books, and the National Road Safety Commission.
