Fire Service Is Paralyzed -- Peace Watch
Ms. Diana Nyankopah Daniels, Chief Executive Officer of Peace Watch Ghana, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) committed to the welfare of the security agencies has warned that until efforts are made to equip the Ghana Fire Service, the nation is sitting on a time bomb should any major disaster strike.
According to her, the fire service is ill-equipped to fight any massive fire outbreak in the country since its investigations reveal that the Ghana Fire Service has only three fire tenders in the entire Greater Accra Region.
Speaking in an interview in Accra, the Peace Watch CEO explained that though the fire service had more than three fire tenders, virtually all are non-serviceable with the only working three being old, worn-out and out-molded.
Ms. Daniels pointed out that there was the need to get the necessary tools and equipment to the Fire Service to be able to fight any fire disaster in the country effectively.
She said the conditions of service of the Fire Service, the Prisons and the Police are nothing to write home about.
According to her, it was very regrettable that a place like Foreign Affairs should be guarded by private security personnel instead of the police who are trained to scrutinize the movement of people even though she said that private security personnel have also been trying to do their best to provide security to some private properties.
She said very often, Ghanaians are unable to protect their properties, and as a result have lost a lot over the years due to disasters that could have been prevented or overcome with some relative amount of efficiency.
She charged the committee investigating the recent fire disaster that razed down the Foreign Affairs building not to leave any stone unturned but get to the bottom of the matter especially “in connection with the allegation that some people left the ministry building in pick up and soon after the fire started”.
She stated that there was the need for apartments and offices which do not have fire alarm systems to b compelled to acquire them in addition to the designs of high storey being modified to have a helicopter landing site or arena.
She said even though some three persons have been arrested there was still the need for intensive investigations to unravel the motive behind the blaze and called for patience as the security agencies do their work and try to fish out those who may be responsible for the fire outbreak.
