A toothless UN, Aggressive Israel And The Tears in Gaza
Today is the 20th day since Israel started pounding Palestinian civilians in the name of self defence against Hamas with an invasion into the Gaza Stripe.
So far, more than 919 Palestinians are said to be dead and several injured by the Israeli army, with its artillery pushed into the densely populated Gaza city in search of unknown Hamas militants who are firing rockets into Israel.
With the figures of casualties set to rise , Israel remains resolute to its cause of crumbling Hamas while civilians on both sides, just as it happened in the 2006 war against Lebanon lived in fears of attack.
The invasion into Gaza, which is deepening anger across Arab States in the world raises concerns about the deliberate attempt by Israel to attack innocent civilians. It has also exposed the toothless jaws of the UN to taking a firm decision on the faith of the many women and children being attacked by a formidable and aggressive army.
The United States, Israel’s strongest ally has failed to explicitly condemn the massacre, as the saying goes, “the enemy of my friend is my enemy”. The US has again showed the world how selfish she can be, when a cause is in her interest. In the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war, the US behaved just as it is doing now but intervened when it became clear the Hezbollah (Party of God) was tormenting the Israeli army booth for booth.
Countries like France has showed human face to the excessive force Israel is using against innocent civilians. Pictures of dead and injured babies, children and mothers continue to be viewed on international media, with Aljazeera doing its on the ground stories in Gaza and yet most countries in the United nations can not stop this slaughtering.
The Israeli government and army insist that they are not targeting civilians but from all indication, this statement is false. Israel has prevented Journalists from going into Gaza (CNN reports) to make independent assessment of what is happening. There has also been alleged reports of the use of Phosphorus as a weapon in largely populated areas of Gaza which penetrates deep into the skin causing overwhelming burns to victims.
According to analyst both sides in this conflict ( Israel and Hamas) are violating UN conventions and resolutions. Israel claims that Hamas is using civilians as human shield which is ironic because it is a well known fact that Hamas is not an army representing Palestinians in general like the Israeli army. Yes! It may be true that Hamas is using human shields but does that warrant a massacre of civilians?
WAY FORWARD
Israel has on several occasions reported the firing of rockets and mottar into its territories. They have on many instances, said Hamas was firing rockets into Israel that threatens the lives of its citizens.
“ Why can’t Hamas stop firing into Israel?” Why would they put the lives of innocent Palestinian mothers and children in jeopardy?
This war would continue now and then if both sides do not live in peace. Israel evokes more hatred from young one who watched their parents, brothers and sisters die from the hands of Israeli bomb.
These young ones could be easily assimilated into various networks who are against or enemies of Israel.
Israel on the other hand have the rights to defend itself but need to map out better ways of dealing with Hamas than just firing into civilians.
The fact that they have the strongest army in the Middle East does not warrant them to bully others. The United States and the United Nations need to put up better policies to address the situation.
